AURANGABAD: The Aurangabad police have chalked out a series of confidence building measures to remove misconceptions and apprehensions in the minds of youth from the minority community. The concept, if successful, will be implemented across the state.
Commissioner of Police Sanjay Kumar has drafted a roadmap, following directions by the state director general of police Sanjeev Dayal during his recent visit to the city. The draft has been prepared based on the experience of senior police officers. Kumar told TOI, "The draft copy of the roadmap was prepared with inputs from senior officers. Confidence building measures will be taken up to increase interaction with the minority community, especially the youth."
As a part of the plan, officers will interact often with members of the minority community and keep in touch with them. Steps will be taken so that they do not feel that the police target them. Officials said that the Malegaon blast case, in which the ATS arrested Muslim youths and later the National Investigation Agency has filed a chargesheet against some others, is being viewed with apprehension within the community.
"We want to know the exact feeling within the community about police. We will also strive to clear any misconceptions they may have. We will make them understand their role in nation building," Kumar said.
Deputy Commissioner of police (zone-I) Jay Jadhav said, "The city police will conduct football matches which is popular among members of the minority community. Senior police officials conduct workshops in minority institutes to emphasis student's role in nation building. The initiative would continue till Diwali and will restart from January next year."
Highly placed police sources said Dayal had discussed issues like communication gap between the minorities and the police during his visit on May 3. Officials pointed out during the discussion that intelligence gathering has taken a backseat. Many officials felt that there was a growing disconnect between the youth and the police force.
The DGP has instructed senior cops that there should not be any assumptions or presumptions against any person or community while policing.
A senior police official said, "There are lot of presumptions in the minds of the minority community about the state anti-terrorism squad and the police. We are trying to ensure that these do not turn into firm beliefs."
Deputy Commissioner of police (Zone-II) Arvind Chavaria said, "As a part of the confidence building measures, senior cops will give guidance to students preparing for competitive exams. The aim is to bring everyone into the main stream and contribute toward nation building."
