Engineering graduates protest against HCL Tech

BANGALORE: Engineering graduates who were made hiring offers in 2011 by India's fourth largest IT company HCL Technologies protested before the company's offices across Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata and Noida on Monday saying that they had no clarity on when they could join. This is the second such protest in a week.
The students got their engineering degrees in June last year. But they say they haven't heard from the company on the formal joining date as yet. "I have taken a loan of Rs 3.25 lakh. The bank is pressurizing me to start paying up my EMIs," said an engineering student who did not want to be named.
A statement from HCL Technologies said, "We remain committed to have each individual with letters of intent from HCL join us. We have also shared that we will start communicating the dates of joining in August 2013 or even earlier, for positions across our lines of business ."
Some IT companies are unwilling yet to admit it publicly, but uncertainties about IT demand in the wake of the global slowdown are compelling them to stagger their fresher joining dates over a much longer period than is normal. Infosys had deferred joining dates of the 2012 batch by three months. The company said they would complete the on-boarding of candidates in the April-June quarter of the next financial year.
Long waits for joining are worrisome for candidates because they risk losing their 'fresher' tag and work experience . "I have not been able to pursue higher studies because HCL kept us busy with the Front Runner Program test," said another student.
For the first time HCL introduced a mandatory entrylevel online test for new hires called the Front Runner Program (FRP). The test, with 30 multiple option questions on programming languages, was held in September and was to determine which candidates would be on-boarded first. Students told TOI that only 1,300 out of the 6,000 who sat for the test cleared it.
Students were then informed that FRP would be conducted again on January 6 for those who had not cleared it. But that test was cancelled . Students who cleared the September test have not been on-boarded yet.
The HCL spokesperson said the company had immediate needs in its infrastructure services line of business . "Individuals are invited to consider these, and make a personal choice to start their career now or await a date of joining into another line of business (around August)," the company said.
